When one thinks of Nuclear Power Plant, one often think of accidents, radiation, and huge explosions. Since the Japan Earthquake and the incident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, nations around the world took a different perspective on nuclear plant.
In my perspective, instead of trying to make the plants safer, most people just completely shy away from nuclear power plants. In the US, the amount of energy generated via nuclear power plant decreased. Germany is going through an anti-nuclear phase. And many other countries are exploring other options.
Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest energy to burn, but there are of course a lot of externalities, one of which is the amount of water that is needed. Just last week CNN released a news about a new radioactive water leak at the Fukushima Daiichi Plants. Over 100 metric tons of contaminated water was discovered at local water source. This is but of a series of leaks and it is stories like this that keeps people away from nuclear energy.
Better and safer plants are needed in order to make nuclear viable, and from what it looks like right now, safer nuclear energy will be a story of the future, very very far distance future.
